Forest: The Fredskov Woods

Fredskoven consists partly of an old (lyst) forest, ie a forest that is intended to be an excursion site for city dwellers, a afforestation area, and some meadow areas in Rudkøbing Vejle.

What you can experience in the forest:

  • See Rudkøbing Bymølle
  • Let your dog run free in the dog forest
  • Walk along the Øhavsstien trail
  • Pick wild garlic in April and May
  • Alfio Bonanno's stone sculpture

The Peace Forest in Rudkøbing

Fredskoven consists partly of an old recreational forest, i.e. a forest intended as an excursion destination for townspeople, a forest plantation area and some meadows in Rudkøbing Vejle. The old Fredskov forest, covering 3 hectares, was expanded by 14.5 hectares of new forest in 1991/1992. This means that you can go for walks both in the open Vejle and in the shelter of the forest.

10 hectares of the area have been planted with deciduous trees, which over the next 50-100 years will create a high forest.

On the forest floor of Fredskoven, you will find extensive carpets of wild garlic, which bloom in early May.

Dog forest

In January 2021, the dog forest opened, where you can let your dog run free.

The dog forest is located to the left of the path when you walk from the car park on Fredskovvej.

Traces of the past

Festival site and summer restaurant

From around 1900, Fredskoven was used as a festival site. There was a summer restaurant in Fredskoven, which was frequently used by the residents of Rudkøbing. The restaurant closed in 1957, was demolished and covered with earth.

Memorial stone

A memorial stone has been erected for brickworks owner Ferdinand Christensen, who in 1876 took the initiative to secure the forest as a municipal recreational forest. In 1973, the dilapidated pavilion was demolished and replaced by a playground.
