The soul of Langeland in colours and poetry – experience Langelands Septet in Rudkøbing Town Hall

A work of art with rhythm, symbolism and a sense of home

In the heart of Rudkøbing, in the council chamber of the historic town hall, hangs a unique mosaic work where art and poetry merge. Langelands Septet was created by internationally renowned artist Helle Scharling-Todd – a visual interpretation of Frank Jæger's poem of the same name.

The hall where the work is hung provides the setting for both municipal council meetings and weddings – which is precisely why the mosaic's symbolic narrative about the phases of life takes on an extra dimension in this room.

A day – and a life – in three acts

The composition is divided into seven sections and three main themes: morning, noon and evening.

These periods reflect both the rhythm of the day and the phases of life. From the moon, interpreted by birds and morning rain, to midday with a lazy sun and the repetitions of the afternoon – and finally a conclusion in the golden glow of the sunset.

Frank Jæger's poem gives the work soul

The Langeland moon,

which we saw last night,

lay brass-yellow on the sea

and shiny as a trumpet.

We saw it rise

and be brought to two lips,

The Langeland moon,

which we heard last night,

it had the tone of the island

my ear is ready:

Who blows so sweetly

on Langeland's trumpet?

Based on the poem, Helle Scharling-Todd has translated the words into a sensory mosaic work, created from colourful stones from Italy. The result is a visual narrative that captures the tone and atmosphere of Langeland.

A life with art in public spaces

Helle Scharling-Todd was born in Rudkøbing and has worked with glass and mosaic art for over 50 years. Her works adorn public spaces around the world, but Langelands Septet has a special meaning – as an artistic homecoming to her hometown.

Take a look inside the town hall and experience how the poetry of life unfolds in colours, shapes and light.
