Choose the route that suits your day

The walk starts and ends in Lohals, so it’s easy to combine it with a break at the harbour, a trip to the beach or a visit to one of the town’s cafés. You can choose between a shorter route through the woods and along the beach, or a longer walk that takes you even further into the North Langeland countryside. Along the way, you’ll walk through atmospheric woodland and close to the coast, where you’ll enjoy views of the sea, ancient trees and plenty of peace and quiet. On the long route, you’ll also follow part of the Øhavsstien trail and cross Langeland from coast to coast.

Forest, beach and black squirrel

North of Lohals lie some of Langeland’s largest forest areas. Here, you’ll come close to Vestre Stigtehave, also known as Troldeskoven (the Troll Forest) because of its old, gnarled oak trees. The woods are home to Denmark’s only wild population of black squirrels, so look up into the treetops along the way – you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse. The walk also takes you to Lohals Strand, where the sand, bathing jetty and sea views make it the perfect place to round off your walk with a dip or a quiet break by the water.

Things to do nearby

When you’re in Lohals, there are plenty of great things to do nearby. Visit Lohals Harbour and soak up the relaxed maritime atmosphere, take a stroll along Nordstrand, or head out into the woods surrounding the town. You can also explore Hollænderhuset and Djævlestenen, or drive to the northern tip of Langeland, where the coastal landscape opens out towards the Great Belt. Langeland is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark ‘The South Funen Archipelago’, and the area around Lohals offers a fascinating insight into the interplay between forest, coast, ice-age landscape and human history.

Practical information

The tour is self-guided using the Vagabond Tours app. The terrain varies between forest paths, gravel tracks and coastal stretches, and there may be uneven sections. The walk is therefore best suited to visitors who are used to walking on varied terrain, and is generally not suitable for wheelchair users. Lohals can be reached by car and public transport from the rest of Langeland.
