Cycle route around the Baltic Sea island of Langeland
Discover Langeland's most atmospheric cycle route: the 160 km 'Castle Route', which winds its way past the coast, idyllic villages, castles and manor houses.
The Castle Route on Langeland, located within the UNESCO Global Geopark South Funen Archipelago, is a stunning circular tour that winds through the island's diverse landscape. You will pass castles and magnificent estates, charming villages, deep forests, and breathtaking views of the archipelago. Measuring 160 km in length, the route on Langeland is perfect for a cycling holiday, offering ample opportunity for immersion and curious stops along the way.
The entire Castle Route on Funen and the Islands is 660 km long and is divided into 14 stages.
The cycle route around Langeland
Typically, you will start in Rudkøbing, where the cobbled streets and bustling town centre provide a charming setting for your departure. Alternatively, you may have arrived on Langeland by ferry from Spodsbjerg. From these eastern and western arrival points, the Castle Route heads north towards Lohals or south towards Bagenkop.
This route offers plenty of sea views and takes you through forests, farmland and villages, where you will find accommodation and shopping opportunities. You can see the island's wild horses, visit the Langelandsfortet Cold War museum, explore old castles and manor houses, and discover charming harbour towns. You can also explore Langeland's art towers and experience the island's creative pulse along the way.
Take it stage by stage at your own pace!
The route is clearly signposted and can easily be divided into stages, allowing you to tailor your trip to your mood and level of fitness. There are cafés, accommodation and attractions evenly distributed along the route, so you are never far from a rest stop or an ice cream by the water.
Thanks to the island's narrow shape, you can easily cycle part of the route, cross the island and cycle back on the opposite side.
You will mainly cycle on small, winding asphalt roads. In a few places, however, the route is forced onto country or gravel roads.
Practical information
The Langeland Castle Route is suitable for both electric and regular bikes. You can also easily hop on and off public transport at several points along the route. While conditions are generally good for cyclists, some sections may be gravel roads.
Whether you choose to cycle the entire route or just a single stage, you can look forward to a relaxing, nature-filled experience – perfect for those who dream of a cycling holiday in Denmark with views of the archipelago and the chance to immerse themselves in their surroundings.
