Step into the darkness and let your senses run free

Vestre Stigtehave is one of the darkest places on Langeland – which is precisely why the forest has been chosen as the backdrop for a special Dark Sky walking route. The 3.3 km long yellow route on the Danish Nature Agency's land winds through dense beech forest and opens up to the sky along the way. When darkness falls, the forest changes character. The sounds become clearer, the smells sharper – and your sense of sight is challenged. This is where you realise what darkness really is. A refuge from artificial light, noise and pace.

Starry skies and undisturbed night-time darkness

On clear evenings, Vestre Stigtehave is an ideal place to enjoy the night sky. Here you can see constellations, planets and perhaps even the Milky Way – without being disturbed by street lights and city lights. Take a walk in silence or at a leisurely pace – and let the sky take centre stage.

Extend the experience under the open sky

If you want to stay overnight, there are shelters in the area that can be booked online. There is something very special about falling asleep surrounded by dark forest and waking up to the birds' morning concert. Combine your trip with a visit to the coast with views of Funen.

Practical information

The route is best suited for walking and requires sensible footwear. Bring a headlamp or torch – but turn it off occasionally and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. The forest roads are wide, and parts of the route can be used with a wheelchair, but with a little help on the inclines.

Vestre Stigtehave is located just north of Lohals.
The route starts either at Hollænderhus or Lohals Nordstand.
