WE ARE THE SEA – a sound walk in the South Funen Archipelago

WE ARE THE SEA is an audio experience created for journeys between the islands of the South Funen Archipelago. Through five site-specific narratives and ten newly composed songs, the sea, the islands and the people are woven together across Langeland, Svendborg, Faaborg-Midtfyn and Ærø.

The audio work can be experienced on selected ferry crossings in the Archipelago or from your own boat. Each story is based on the specific boat journey and allows space for history, imagination, reflection and the sounds of the surrounding landscape.

Five audio journeys between the islands

The stories unfold on the crossings between Rudkøbing and Strynø, Rudkøbing and Marstal, Svendborg and Ærøskøbing, Svendborg, Drejø and Skarø, and Faaborg, Lyø and Avernakø.

The individual audio journeys traverse different eras and genres. Among other things, you’ll encounter stories about the history of the Archipelago, life by the water, love, loss, climate, faith and visions of the future. Together, the stories form a unified work of art with the South Funen Archipelago as their common focal point.

Newly written stories and songs

All the texts and songs in VI ER HAV have been written specifically for the audio work and the crossing during which they are experienced. Music, voices and sound design add an extra dimension to the boat trip, whilst the islands, the horizon and the waves glide by.

The stories last around half an hour and are designed for adults and older children. The experience can therefore be a lovely addition to your holiday, whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple or with your family.

Nearby experiences

VI ER HAV can be combined with experiences in all four archipelago municipalities. Explore the old streets of Rudkøbing, experience island life on Strynø, visit the maritime settings in Marstal and Ærøskøbing, or continue your journey to the smaller islands of Drejø, Skarø, Lyø and Avernakø.

In Svendborg and Faaborg, you’ll find charming harbour areas, culture and town life right by the water. On Langeland and Ærø, you can combine the sound experience with walks, cycle rides, beaches and stories from the islands’ long maritime history.

The South Funen Archipelago has been designated the South Funen Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark. Here, the landscape tells the story of the Ice Age, rising sea levels and the many islands that today form the backdrop to nature, everyday life and community.

Practical information

‘VI ER HAV’ can be listened to for free in the BaggårdTeatret app under ‘audio walks’. Remember to bring a fully charged mobile phone and headphones before boarding the ferry or setting sail in your own boat.

The experience is recommended for ages 11 and over. It’s a good idea to download the app and audio content before your boat trip begins, as internet connectivity can be patchy out at sea.

Accessibility depends on the individual ferry, port and island. Therefore, if you use a wheelchair or have special needs, please contact or check the relevant ferry operator’s information before your trip. Several of the ferry ports can be reached by public transport, but options vary between destinations.
