Kunsttårn 6 – A vulnerable and powerful portrait of family life
At Pederstrupvej 16A, Kunsttårn 6 stands as a special place for reflection and recognition.
Here, Langeland-based visual artist Silje Bruun has created the work “Familie” (Family), in which androgynous figures in comic book style depict the complex, beautiful, and fragile bonds that tie a family together.
From music to drawing
In her younger years, Silje Bruun chose between the piano and drawing. She opted for visual art, and today music has been put aside – temporarily – while pencils and brushes have taken center stage in her creative life. However, she has always drawn, and always with a particular fondness for strange, composite figures, which often arise from simple ideas jotted down in her phone notes: “chewing gum machine” or “hunchbacked man with a dragonfly on his back.”
A work inspired by motherhood
“Family” was created in the wake of Silje Bruun's own journey into motherhood. The work stretches up the eight-meter-high walls of the tower, where the figures lift, hold, and support each other—a metaphor for the dependence and cohesion found in close relationships. It is poetic and slightly whimsical, but also honest and open to interpretation. Silje's style has changed with life – from the more macabre to the more caring and warmly expressed.
Gallery and workplace in Rudkøbing
Together with her partner Jens Hornemann, Silje Bruun runs a gallery and workshop in Østergade in Rudkøbing – in the premises where the artist Alfio Bonanno previously worked. Here, Silje works at her large drawing table in the shop area, close to the hustle and bustle of the street and visitors. Her pictures have found their way into art exhibitions and local businesses, and she has been part of Langeland's art scene since her return.
Inspiration from Kvium and Kahlo
Silje Bruun cites both Michael Kvium and Frida Kahlo as important artistic influences, although her own works differ in both expression and mood. There is a special blend of humor, mysticism, and everyday reflection in her images – something that invites both smiles and reflection.
