Beloved – and missed: A work, a story, an empty space
An art tower with a curled edge
On Haugbøllevej, Art Tower 9 stands like a small portal to a vast artistic universe. Here you would have encountered “Beloved” – a pageboy-haired man with gold glitter over his heart and tens of thousands of blue BIC pen strokes. The work, created by ceramicist and draughtsman Lars Calmar, was stolen shortly after it was installed, but its absence still fills the tower with narrative, emotion and frustration.
Lars Calmar – between ceramics and ballpoint pen
Lars Calmar is best known for his playful and direct ceramic works – plump ladies, naked men, blooming boxers and Christmas plates with a twist. His characteristic BIC pen drawings draw on childhood doodles, tattoo aesthetics and a language full of colour and body. Art Tower 9 was a rare opportunity to experience this side of his practice in large format.
Art at eye level – and then some
Calmar has previously created works for several of the art towers on Langeland – from rain of old ladies to giant children's heads and hanging bodies with tattoos. His art is both humorous and touching, raw and poetic. Art Tower 9 adds to that narrative – not only as an exhibition space, but as a place where the absence itself becomes part of the work.
Experiences nearby
Lindelse is close to several of the natural gems of the South Funen Archipelago Geopark. For example, you can combine your visit with a walk in Hennetved Haver, experience Lindelse Nor – a drowned ice age landscape – or explore the wild nature and organic farming of Skovsgaard Gods. Several of the other art towers are also nearby, such as Art Towers 8 and 10, forming a beautiful art route through the Langeland landscape.
Practical information
The art towers are free to visit and accessible all year round. The tower is accessible from public roads, but is not necessarily wheelchair accessible. There is no direct public transport to Art Tower 9, but it can be reached by bike or car from Lindelse or Rudkøbing.
